Honoring our 9/11 Canine Heroes

Posted by SusanStokes on September 11, 2012

Let’s not forget the brave dogs who helped during this tragedy…

The events of 9/11 affected so many lives and will continue to affect so many lives for years to come.  Today we remember the men and women who lost their lives 12 years ago today and the brave first responders who answered the call for help. What I want to highlight here is how our brave canine friends assisted through the search and rescue efforts.  Following are some links to stories and photos that we cannot forget.

The National Search Dog Foundation played a huge role in the search and rescue efforts of 9/11. As noted on their website, the foundation was founded in 1996, and is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, non-governmental organization based in Ojai, California.  Their mission is to strengthen disaster response in America by recruiting rescued dogs and partnering them with firefighters and other first responders to find people buried alive in the wreckage of disasters.  See the list of search dog teams deployed on 9/11 here

Last year, on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, a special parade was held in honor of the dogs and their handlers who did so much to support the rescue efforts.

September 11th – We have not forgotten.  We will never forget.

Many of the dogs that worked tirelessly during the rescue efforts have since passed over Rainbow Bridge.  We will remember them always.
